What is Pilates?

Pilates was originally developed as a method for dancers to recover from injuries. Today, however, it's embraced by individuals from all walks of life looking to take advantage of its numerous health benefits!

Put simply, Pilates is an exercise that emphasises precise movements, controlled breathing, and targeted muscle engagement. By focusing on these elements, Pilates enhances muscle tone and stability, leading to improved overall fitness and well-being.

One of the stand-out features of Pilates is its structured approach to exercise. Traditional Pilates classes are typically performed in a specific order, with each movement flowing into the next. This ensures a comprehensive workout that targets various muscle groups while promoting balance and flexibility.

Pilates Vs Yoga

As some of the most low-impact workouts available, Pilates and Yoga are practices that share many of the same ideas and principles. From promoting mental health, and a deeper connection to the body to improving flexibility, endurance, strength and control, there is a reason these historical techniques are loved by beginners and experts alike.

With so many similarities, it can be easy to get these two mixed up. But what is the difference? Here’s a closer look:

  • Yoga: Yoga is considered a therapeutic practice. While it offers various physical benefits, yoga is often used for mental health and meditation.
  • Pilates: Pilates, on the other hand, has routes in physical healing. There is certainly an element of mindfulness and various mental health benefits, Pilates is a resistance exercise that aims to help gain flexibility and strength, among other physical benefits.

Pilates Equipment

Pilates is an exercise that can be done with little to no equipment. However, additional equipment and props can be used to enhance your Pilates practice and add variety to your workouts!

  • Mat-Based Pilates: Utilising gravity and body weight for resistance, mat-based Pilates is accessible to all, providing a solid foundation for building strength and flexibility.
  • Equipment-Based Pilates: On the other hand, equipment-based Pilates sessions make use of a number of specially designed equipment to provide a dynamic and full-body workout. Equipment like the Reformer, EXO Chair, Springboard, and Magic Circle offer versatile options for enhancing strength, flexibility, and overall body awareness.

Pilates Benefits

Whether you are just starting your fitness journey, or an enthusiast looking to spice up your everyday routine Pilates can be the ideal solution. It offers a holistic approach to wellness by focusing on controlled movements, breathwork, and mindfulness.

Get Active!

Pilates is a great way to get active! It offers the perfect balance between challenging your body without being too harsh on your joints. Unlike high-impact workouts, Pilates focuses on controlled movements and gentle exercises that strengthen muscles and improve flexibility.

Ease Stress and Tension

Exercise isn’t just about improving your physical health; it’s also an incredibly powerful stress reliever. With an emphasis on controlled movements and breathwork, Pilates can help release tension and clear the mind. It encourages you to stay present in the moment allowing you to let go of worries and distractions as you focus on your movements and breathing.

Builds Core Strength

From bringing in groceries (it all has to be done in one trip, right?) to taking a stroll or playing with your kids, a strong core is essential to everyday activities and your overall well-being. Pilates targets all muscles in the core area, providing essential support for your back and spine. Strengthening your core not only protects against injury but also improves breathing and posture so that you can move with ease and confidence.

Improves Posture

Many of us spend most of our time at a desk. This has made poor posture and back pain a common issue today! Pilates addresses this by strengthening back and abdominal muscles through targeted exercises and movements. By focusing on these muscle groups, Pilates helps combat the negative effects of prolonged sitting, promoting better posture and reducing the risk of chronic back pain.

Finding The Right Pilates Studio

Starting your Pilates journey can be an exciting step towards a healthier, more balanced lifestyle. When searching for a Pilates Studio, there are a few things you should consider to ensure you find the right fit:

  • Goals: First things first, ask yourself “What are my fitness goals” This can help you find a studio that offers classes and sessions that can help you achieve these.
  • Location: Much like any exercise routine, consistency is key! That’s why it is best to opt for a studio that is easy to get to. Think about it; sometimes it can be difficult to find the motivation when your studio is far away! However, if your studio is easy to get to, you are more likely to make the trip!
  • Mat vs Reformer: Consider whether you prefer mat-based Pilates or workouts using specialized equipment like the Reformer. Some studios offer both options as well as intro classes that allow you to explore different techniques and find what works best for you.
  • Class types: Many studios offer a range of class types and packages. By taking your goals and skill level into consideration, you can find a studio that offers exactly what you are looking for.
  • Trainer experience: The expertise of your instructor can also have an impact on your experience. Certified trainers have extensive experience and a passion for helping clients reach their fitness goals.
  • Reviews and recommendations: Lastly, take advantage of reviews and recommendations! This will give you a great idea of the studio, the atmosphere and even insights into what you can expect.
