How the right attire can supercharge your reformer Pilates experience

Starting a new workout routine can be exciting, and Pilates is no exception! While you’ve heard all about the benefits of reformer Pilates, you're likely eager to dive in and experience them for yourself. However, one important aspect that can easily be overlooked is what to wear!

When it comes to what you should wear to Reformer Pilates, it isn't just about fashion – it's about enhancing your performance, comfort, and overall experience. Your choice of clothing can impact your range of motion, flexibility, and even confidence during your workout. So, before you step onto the Reformer, let's explore everything you need to know about dressing for success in your Pilates class.

How The Right Attire Can Improve Your Reformer Pilates Experience

There is no right or wrong answer when it comes to finding the right clothes for your Pilates class. Ultimately, your comfort and confidence is key when it comes to Reformer Pilates. Here are some factors to consider when picking out your Pilates outfit.

Stretchiness

Stretchiness is key. The fabric should allow you to move freely through a complete range of motion without any hindrance. During a reformer Pilates session, your body will twist, bend, and stretch in a number of directions. Your outfit should be stretchy enough to ensure your movements aren't restricted, allowing you to focus on proper form and maximise the benefits of each exercise.

Fit

The right fit can make all the difference in your Reformer Pilates class. Opt for clothing that hugs your body comfortably without feeling constricting. A snug yet non-restrictive fit ensures that your movements are supported, enhancing your stability and control on the Reformer. It is better to avoid overly loose or baggy attire, as it may get in the way and ultimately hinder your performance.

Fabric

One of the most crucial aspects of reformer Pilates attire is the fabric. If you want to be comfortable in your reformer Pilates classes, aim for fabrics that are both stretchy and breathable. While low-impact, reformer Pilates is a full-body workout and can quickly induce a good sweat throughout your class.

Moisture-wicking fabrics will efficiently draw sweat away from your skin, keeping you dry and comfortable throughout your workout. Additionally, breathable materials promote airflow, preventing overheating and discomfort during intense sessions on the Reformer.

Weight

Hoodies and sweatpants can be used during a session, however, these heavy or bulky pieces can weigh you down and impede your flexibility, making it challenging to execute some Pilates exercises. These can also become hot and uncomfortable, causing you to overheat during intense workouts. Instead, opt for lightweight, shirt sleeve pieces. You’ll enjoy your workout far more if you are comfortable!

Comfort

Pilates can be intense, especially if you’re new to the routine. That’s why it is best to choose clothing that feels soft against your skin and doesn't cause irritation or chafing with prolonged use. Seamless construction and flatlock seams can help minimise friction, ensuring a smooth and comfortable experience on the Reformer. Prioritising comfort allows you to fully enjoy the benefits of Pilates without distraction or discomfort.

Confidence

Lastly, but most importantly, is confidence! Your clothing choices should make you feel confident and ready to conquer your Reformer Pilates session. By choosing attire that makes you look and feel good, you'll approach each exercise with a more positive mindset, allowing you to push your limits and achieve your fitness goals.

A Closer Look At The Best Clothes To Choose

When selecting your reformer Pilates outfit, aim to strike a balance between comfort, functionality, and style. Comfort ensures that you can focus on your exercises without being distracted by clothing that shifts or causes discomfort whereas functionality involves choosing pieces that facilitate your movements and achieve proper form.

Shirts & Tops

Reformer Pilates classes involve a lot of movement and require you to move your arms freely. While shirts with sleeves are perfectly fine, fitted tank tops or moisture-wicking tees are excellent choices as well, as they ensure that your posture and movements aren't hindered while keeping you cool and dry throughout your session at the Pilates studio.

Legging Or Shorts?

The choice between leggings and shorts ultimately depends on your personal preference and your comfort level. Leggings offer full coverage, which can be especially helpful during more complex movements that involve sliding on the Reformer.

Shorts, on the other hand, provide better ventilation and might be preferable if you tend to get warm easily. Whichever you choose, make sure the fabric is stretchy enough to accommodate a wide range of motions, ensuring you can move comfortably and easily!

Don’t Forget Footwear!

In many Pilates exercises, proper foot alignment is important as improper movements can lead to poor posture and even injury. So, when you get to your Pilates class, you will be asked to remove your shoes but keep your socks on.

However, it is important to be able to maintain your stability and balance when performing exercises on the machine. This is why many studios, including Club Pilates, require grip socks. These are specialised socks with rubber soles that prevent your feet from slipping on the machine, allowing you to focus on your moves and confidently execute each exercise.

Getting ready for your first Club Pilates session? How exciting! Don’t forget to grab a pair of grip socks, which are available to purchase at our studio, so you can make the most out of your session!

Do I Need Gloves?

Gloves can provide additional grip and comfort if you find your hands slipping or getting sore during the workout. However, more often than not, gloves are not needed for a Reformer Pilates session. As long as you don’t have any issues with gripping a bar or holding straps, gloves will not be needed. However, if you’d feel more comfortable wearing them, you are encouraged to bring your own.

Accessories & Optional Extras

While we have covered the basics of what to wear to a Reformer Pilates session, there are a few extra accessories you can bring to get the most out of your session. These include:

  • Sweatbands: A small towel can be useful for wiping sweat during and after your session.
  • Towels: Have a towel handy to wipe down equipment and keep yourself dry.
  • Water bottle: Stay hydrated throughout your session by bringing along a water bottle to sip on between exercises.
  • Headbands and Hair ties: Keep any strands away from your face using fabric headbands and hair ties for a distraction-free workout.

What Not To Wear To Your Reformer Pilates Session

While we've already explained what you can wear to a session, sometimes it's helpful to remember some of the things to avoid. By steering clear of these items, you'll be better prepared for a comfortable, safe, and effective Reformer Pilates session!

  • Baggy Clothes: Avoid wearing baggy clothes to your Reformer Pilates session. Loose-fitting attire can get in the way or obstruct your movements, making it difficult to maintain proper form.
  • Tick Fabric: Thicker fabrics are not ideal for Pilates. They tend to retain heat and moisture, making you uncomfortable during your workout.
  • Sneakers: Sneakers are a no-go for a Reformer Pilates class as they can hinder your ability to perform the exercises correctly and reduce your connection with the equipment.
  • Jewellery: Be sure to take your jewellery off before your session. Necklaces, bracelets, and large earrings can be a distraction and can pose a safety hazard.
  • Clothes with Drawstrings and Tiebacks: Clothing with drawstrings and tiebacks should be avoided as they can get caught in the Reformer machine, posing a safety hazard. Additionally, clothes with bulky zippers and embellishments can cause discomfort during various movements.

Now You’ve Got The Look, Why Not Book The Class?

When getting ready for your first Reformer session, aim to strike a balance between comfort, functionality and style! Comfort ensures that you can focus on your exercises without distraction, allowing you to fully engage in each movement.

Functionality involves choosing attire that facilitates your movements, providing the support and flexibility needed to perform at your best. And lastly, style is an added personal touch that can boost your confidence and motivation during the workout, making you feel good about yourself as you train!
